The Cohen Art Foundation is committed to supporting educational, artistic, and legal initiatives that reflect the spirit of its founders. Our core objectives include:
Art & Cultural Preservation
Committed to preserving and promoting contemporary art, particularly in Asia, the Cohen Art Foundation supports exhibitions and projects that elevate artistic discourse. A key initiative is the digitization of the Joan Lebold Cohen photographic archive, ensuring scholars, students, and the public have access to critical documentation of contemporary Chinese art and broader Asian culture.
As part of its dedication to accessibility, the Foundation has established the Cohen Art Foundation Library at Cube Art Center in Beacon, NY. This space serves as a resource for researchers, artists, and the general public, providing access to a growing collection of materials on contemporary art and culture.
Human Rights & Rule of Law Advocacy
The Cohen Art Foundation is committed to advancing human rights and democratic values through partnerships and programming. By supporting initiatives that defend fundamental freedoms and promote democratic governance, the Foundation seeks to drive meaningful change on a global scale.
An annual or biannual lecture series brings together thought leaders, activists, and scholars to engage in critical discussions on the future of law and governance. In addition to these public dialogues, the Foundation sponsors research, publications, and discussions that explore pressing legal and policy issues, fostering a deeper understanding of justice and the rule of law.
Awards & Recognitions
To honor individuals whose work embodies the pioneering spirit of its founders, the Cohen Art Foundation has established two key awards. The Joan Lebold Cohen Award recognizes artists who have made a profound impact on contemporary art, celebrating those who push boundaries and redefine artistic expression. The Jerome A. Cohen Award acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to human rights, democracy, and legal advocacy, highlighting those who work to uphold justice and freedom.
Advisory Board & Collaborations
Guided by a distinguished advisory board, the Cohen Art Foundation works alongside leading voices in the arts and humanities. Current members include world-renowned artist and activist Ai Weiwei and Jane Debevoise, chairman of the Asia Art Archive. The Foundation continues to invite visionary leaders, artists, and scholars to contribute to its mission, ensuring that its initiatives remain relevant, impactful, and forward-thinking.
